North of Thailand : The north is a region of forests, mountains, rivers and waterfalls. It is also a place steeped in history and culture. Traditional methods of farming are still used on crops such as coffee, rice, vegetables and tea.
There are still many areas in the North that are excellent for birding and other nature watching. Many of the birds seen here can not be seen elsewhere in Thailand. This is due to the fact that the Southern end of the Himalayan range is in this area so many birds otherwise only seen in China can be seen here, especially in cold winters.

South of Thailand : The south is comprised of the peninsular and many islands, both inshore and offshore. Bounded on both sides by water the people of the south are generally a seafaring lot, and this region offers some magnificent seafood dishes. The south is also a major exporter of rubber, palm oil and coconut.
The nature in South of Thailand is very different from that in the North, this is mainly due to the fact that the peninsular used to be an island itself and so it's flora and fauna have more in common with the Indonesian islands than with the Thai mainland. The peninsular is also a great place to see raptors as it is on the main migration path between China and Russia in the North and Malaysia and Indonesia in the South. In the province of Chumphon, where the peninsular is at it's narrowest, thousands of Buzzards, Sparrowhawks, Eagles and Bazas can be seen flying through every day in September and October.

Central Thailand : The East Coast is famous for its abundance of culinary choices, from fresh seafood to spicy local dishes. In addition, it offers a vast range of seafood products to take home. Tropical fruits grown here are among the tastiest in the country. The most famous historical town in Thailand, Ayuthaya, a former capitol, is not far from Bangkok.
There are two main kinds of birding opportunities in this area.
Kaeng Krachan is Thailand's largest national park and hosts over 450 forest birds. It is found at the juncture of the Northern and Southern faunal areas of Thailand so is a great place to find both Northern and Southern species. Kaeng Krachan also borders a vast undeveloped area in Myanmar and so provides habitat for many mammals, including Tiger, Leopard and Elephant.
There are many and varied wetlands in Central Thailand including huge fresh water marshes and mudflats used by migrating waders. In some open areas near Bangkok it is possible to see large flocks of Asian Open Bill storks.

Regions of Thailand
North East of Thailand : The main occupation in the North East of Thailand is farming, it is the biggest producer of rice in Thailand. There are many different kind of rice, in the more Northern areas sticky rice is the favourite. The culture of the Southern areas is highly influenced by Cambodia and some temple areas are reminiscent of Ankor Wat.
Although the large agricultural areas are not good for nature watching, there are a few National Parks in the area including the very popular Khao Yai NP. Khao Yai is very accessible, has good roads, and a variety of hotels and restaurants. There are more than 300 species of birds present and many different mammals.
Nature in Thailand
Nature abounds in Thailand. It is host to almost 1,000 birds, around 1,000 butterflies, 10,000 moths, over 300 reptiles and countless beetles and other insects. Even the seas are teeming with life, we have recorded over 200 species of reef fish just snorkelling off our local beach.
Even after four years of nature trips, both locally and around the country, not a day goes by without us photographing some new creature.
We fully recommend that if you visit the country you spend some time in the forest with a local nature guide, it is sure to be a very enjoyable and memorable experience.
